My online moniker encapsulates my simple Street Philosophy. It revolves around two core principles.
Empathy. Give empathy to everyone you meet. On Wheels refers to proactively reaching out to help others, and being part of humanity by offering support. A life guided by empathy is a powerful one that has left me with few regrets.
Keep your head on a swivel. Situational awareness, all the time. Ask yourself, what could go wrong here, and how would I react? If you don’t have a backup plan, you didn’t have a plan at all.
Care about the person in front of you, and stay alert to being played. Both at once.
I am anti-tribal by conviction, not by cowardice. I believe that lumping all of our beliefs into a single dogma, where believing one thing forces us to believe and defend another, is an incredibly corrosive and counterproductive path for us as humans. You are allowed to not have a tribe. Refusing the shouting match is not fence-sitting.

It is a Wi-Fi digital scope that reads the wafers inside a Kwikset SmartKey cylinder and puts them on your phone, so a lock that used to mean destructive entry becomes a ten minute job with the hardware still on the door.

What I ask, all day, every day
These are the actual questions, the ones that come out of my mouth in a parking lot at three in the morning and on a conference call the same afternoon. Take one and use it. That’s the point of putting them here.
“What’cha working on?”
How every good conversation I have ever had started.
“How can I help?”
These three words are the most satisfying in my vocabulary, denoting knowledge gained and mutual benefit. Terminal success.
“Before we jump into the details, why did the customer call in the first place?”
The presenting problem is usually not the problem.
“Is this just anecdotal evidence, or do you have some metrics to support your position?”
Asked of myself first. If your argument can’t stand up to some legitimate discourse, then maybe it’s worth reconsidering the position.
“What could go wrong here, and how would I react?”
Head on a swivel, in one sentence. If you don’t have a backup plan, you didn’t have a plan at all.
“Who benefits from your fear?”
Follow the incentive, not just the headline. A lot of the anger you feel every day is manufactured, because some of it literally is.
“What’s the alternative?”
If you come up with a complaint or a problem and don’t have a clear alternative solution, that’s worth sitting with. Getting rid of a thing is not a plan. It is a preference.
“Impossible, or just unfamiliar?”
What looks impassable to you right now is, far more often than not, merely unfamiliar. Not impossible. Unfamiliar. The distance between those two words is a whole life.
“Be safe!”
Not a question, and how every call ends. Head on a swivel, but lead with empathy.
Memory
Memory is a method, not a gift
I call the working version the accretive method. The name comes from accretion, growth by the buildup of layers over time. Each experience, each image, each law is a thin deposit laid on the last. Nothing is discarded. The wrong attempt becomes foundation for the right one.
Universal pegs
Twenty images that come from the shape or the property of the number itself, so any two people see the same thing. One is a tree. Two is a light switch. Six is a six gun. Shared scaffolding, and it teaches at scale.
Your own building
The method of loci is very personal. I can teach the rules of the route. It has physical momentum, you never teleport, every station has to shock, and the loop returns to the start. The rooms have to be yours.
The binding image
Ordinary mnemonics store a label and the picture is disposable. A binding image carries the meaning itself, so it surfaces already interpreted, already felt, already usable in the field.
The pictures are the deposit. The question is the withdrawal.
The higher brain is query-driven. Give it a well-formed question and it answers. Give it panic or a blank and it stalls. Remembering becomes asking rather than straining. Same mechanism as where is the last place I had my keys in my hand. Rote memory cannot flex. Understanding can. The full peg system is written up here, free.

How this was made
I dictate faster than I type, and I use AI to help with grammar, structure, and getting my own spoken words onto the page. But the voice is mine, the life is mine, and every judgment in here is mine to answer for. Where memory and record disagreed, I stopped and settled it rather than let a good line stand in for a fact.

The Short List
Everyone has a short list
A special list of people in your life who have shaped who you are and how you think about the world. Certain people who are integral to your development. These eight came from mine, and I still run on them.
- Keep your head up, watch what is going on around you. Think about what’s next.
- Make a plan, even if you have to change it later; make a plan and go for it.
- Never meet a stranger; don’t miss an opportunity to make a friend or at least an ally.
- Hear everyone out; you might learn something from anyone you meet, rich or poor.
- If you aren’t sure about someone, throw out a non sequitur and see how they react. Can they think on their feet?
- Don’t rat, tattle, or squeal unless someone might get hurt. Then it’s up to you to make things right.
- Don’t forget to give everyone and everything you do all that you’ve got. Work until it’s done, and don’t half-ass anything or anyone.
- Most importantly, above all things: love is the highest form of integrity. If you start with integrity, you will finish with love. You can’t buy that.
